Mahatir Mohammad to become world’s oldest leader at 92. He defeated Najib Razak who was beset by corruption allegations. The historic win ended 61 years rule of Barisan Nasional(BN) coalition.Najib said that he will accept the people’s verdict while jubilant supporters of Mahatir Mohammad celebrated in the streets. But an imbroglio remains as no single party has won a majority and it shall be solved by the King as the power rests with him to select the PM.

The reasons for Najib Rasak’s ousting from power is mainly the economy. Two reasons, mainly the rise in the cost of living and a new tax on goods and services became unpopular things. But the major reason is the corruption which happened under Najib Rasak’s regime. Najib was accused of pocketing $700m, but was cleared of all charges in his homeland but still under ivestigation in the US. The money-laundering under the garb of foreign investment and such other misappropriations tarnished the image of Malaysia.
At this crucial juncture Mahatir Mohammad , the erstwhile mentor of Najib Rasak came into the picture. As a leader of BN he had been Malaysia’s PM for 22 years from 1981 to 2003. It was two years ago, when he caught everyone by surprise with his decision leave BN and join the opposition Pakatan Harapan(Alliance of Hope). In a much controversial election filled with complaints on casting postal ballots, rejigging constituencies and also an international “fake news ” warning , finally people got their leader. Mahatir has already made a declaration that he will handover the power in two years, as he is 92 now! The next chances are speculated about Anwar Ibrahim , former ally of Mahatir whom he kicked out of the office. He is curently in jail for having sex with a male employee.
