All calls are not welcome

Across the world, people tend to fall for freebies. In Dubai too, an irresistible offer to
“claim the prize” made people fall prey to a 14 member gang’s trap. The victims got a message in the name of major stores in Dubai.The messages stated about a huge cash prize on the greed of which people fell for it. Anti Economic crimes team of Dubai arrested the 14 member gang of Asians on a tip-off from an apartment in Hor Al Anz on  April 30.

90 phones, massive amounts of money and a large number of illegal local calling cards from the place were seized from the gang as revealed by Brigadier Salem Khalifa Al-
Rumaithi, director of criminal investigation department. Colonel Omar bin Hammad, director of anti-economic crimes department, said all members of the gang entered the country on visit visas and a person who could speak Arabic fluently was the mastermind.

How did they operate?

They chose a number first and then targeted its owner. The gang member who was fluent in  English would talk to the target first and then transfer the call to mastermind in the gang who would talk in Arabic to convince. The gang had used different templates in the messages and various methods while contacting the victims. Then after getting the account number of the victim, the gang members carried out purchases from the websites.

One victim didnt even know that he had been looted until the police informed him. The gang bought six mobiles by using that victim’s money. Later with the help of the police
the amount was credited to his account.

Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai
Police for Criminal Investigation Affairs cautioned people not to disclose their bank
account details to anyone and also congratulated Dubai Police for their prompt
response.
