Pakistan hockey legend Mansoor Ahmed passes away
Pakistan’s hockey icon Mansoor Ahmed, who had been ailing for sometime, died at a hospital in Karachi on Saturday. He was 49.
Ahmed was reportedly suffering from complications arising out of a pacemaker and stents implanted in his heart. The legend had requested India to help him secure a heart transplant.
Following his request, the Pakistan government offered Ahmed a mechanical heart transplantation which, had he accepted, would have been the first time the procedure was to be conducted in Pakistan, the Dawn reported.
Ahmed was a goalkeeper in Pakistan’s national team and represented his country in more than 300 international matches. He won a bronze medal in the 1992 Olympics and was part of the team that won the hockey World Cup in 1994 in Sydney.
He was named the world’s best goalkeeper on four occasions.
