Anna Jarvis : The Childless Mother who established Mothers Day and wanted it Abolished !

When you are overwhelmed by Mothers day quotes and celebration ideas all around, it is a nice idea to step back and spare a moment to understand how it all began. Mothers day wasn’t conjured out of nothing, there is an emotional story behind it.

It was in 1907, Anna Jarvis, an insurance clerk of west Virginia got inspired by the role of her mother, Anne Marie Reeves Jarvis,in her life and decided to create a day for mothers to honour the efforts of all mothers that are seldom appreciated.
 annaWhen her mother passed away on May 9, 1905, the second Sunday in May, Jarvis vowed to create the special day for mothers . After two years of continuous efforts and campaign, she was finally able to establish Mothers day. President Woodrow Wilson issued a national resolution that second Sunday in May would be recognised as mothers day. Jarvis’s efforts had not been for nothing. 

But very soon the event started to be commercialised. People running flower shops, greeting cards, other gifts soon realised the potential it held in it to boost their business, but Jarvis couldn’t take this. What she envisaged as a holy day was being reduced to a fake celebration of sorts . Anna Jarvis spend the remaining of her life trying to cancel Mothers day. She had established white carnation and second Sunday of may as a symbol of mothers day and despite her efforts she couldn’t undo what she did. By the time mothers day was celebrated all across the world. 

As time progressed Anna Jarvis health declined and she died on November 24 1948.
