Child abuse in Theatre: MC Josephine slams Police for their attitude and lack of timely action

M C Josephine, Chairperson of Women’s Commission has said that Police had shown misogynistic attitude in their actions while dealing with the Theatre abuse incident. She said the Police machinery did not function with the alertness that it should have and added that such odd incidents should not be used to tarnish the image of the government. Earlier she had also demanded that the Victim’s mother should be charged along with Moideen Kutty, the prime offender.

She said the abuse had occurred with the consent of the child’s mother . Josephine had met officials of theatre and said that the Women Rights Commission had restrictions on itself to take action as there is a POSCO act involved. She did not forget to congratulate the theatre officials for their exemplary actions in reporting the crime on time.

The abuse occurred on April 18 where Moideen Kutty who sat between the victim and his mother in a theatre was found engaging in sexual activities with both. There seemed to be a mutual consent between mother and the child, but the girl appeared bewildered. The incident was reported as soon as the theatre officials had found it but police took action only after it was forced to as a news channel showed the CCTV footage and caused huge public outcry against the culprit and Police. Apparently the police officials had tried to help the rich culprit.

Moideen Kutty, will be presented before Ponnani court today. Child’s mom has also been taken in to police custody. The victim is currently in a rescue home. Meanwhile the Sub Inspector K G baby who sat on the complaint for day and helped the accused get way with the offence has been suspended.

The incident is only adding to the long list of events where Pinarai Vijayans ‘Janamaithri’ police have been found short of enthusiastic involvement. There have been multiple reports of crimes and mistreatment that involves police officials in the past few months. In another incident that occurred in Kerala, a man who had anticipatory bail papers was arrested forcefully by Police.
