It was on February 21 that Unais was held by police for the first time as a complaint was filed against him by his father in law. A day later Unais was again taken in to custody for allegedly setting his father-in-law’s scooter on fire. Relatives says that from dawn till dusk, Unais underwent some cruel torture in the station. “7 policemen along with the sub inspector beat up Unais. There were traces of blood coming out from his mouth and urine and he was admitted to hospital on February 24” says his relatives. After the incident his health had deteriorated so much that he couldn’t go for job.
Hospital documents are clear about the cause of injury as physical torture. The authorities had treated this as a ‘medical-legal’ case. Police were supposed to reach the hospital and initiate further procedures in 4 days, but it was delayed. Separate complaints have been sent to Chief minister and Human Rights Commission, but so far no action has been taken.
Kerala Police have come under severe criticism lately for its unruly behaviour. Incidents like this are only tarnishing it’s image further. It is high time the Chief minister of Kerala send some strong message to his police and put a break on this Chain of incidents .
