The data shows some staggering numbers. Dubai accounts for 41.2 percent of existing supply with a whopping 41,846 rooms, well ahead of the second placed Makkah with 25,619 rooms. Doha is placed at third position with 10,228 rooms. The data anticipates a combined number of 53 hotels to be opened before 2020. From April 2017, the middle East’s total room construction has shown a 36.3 percent increase.
Considering the number of visitors of Dubai every year, these star hotels are becoming a growing need. Dubai International Airport had 83.7 million passengers in 2016 and the number is ever growing. Dubai currently has 104 five star hotels. A comprehensive study of market by Dubai Tourism says that the room supply is all set to reach 132,000 by the end of 2019. About 78 percent of these rooms is expected to be occupied.
Timothy Kelly, GM and Senior Vice President of Operations, Atlantis the Palm, said that there will be a steady growth in the number of visits in coming years. He says there is a small gap between visitation and growing hotel inventory. He reckons currently the supply is adequate but will soon need to increase the number of hotels to accommodate more visitors.
