Reaching the New Heights, India has now reached or in sectors surpassed the world powers. A mass transformation with a new vigor is now visible in the Science, Defence, and health sectors in India. Now its India’s entry into the world of Artificial Intelligence in Defence sectors. To meet the future threats, a futuristic defense sector is getting ready. Soon its the time for unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned naval vessels, unmanned tasks and automatic robotic rifles.
The new revamp to the Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force by the Central Government is a part of a broader policy to prepare our Forces and to meet the Chinese threat. Ajay Kumar, Secretary Defence Production has said that the government had decided to introduce Artificial Intelligence in all the three forces considering the vastness and requirement of these areas in future warfare. The AI introduction to the Forces will be in a Public-Private Model. The task of finalizing the specifics and the framework of the project was entrusted to Tata Sons Chairman N.Chandrasekharan.Ajay Kumar told PTI that “We need to prepare ourselves for the next generation warfare which will be more and more technology driven, more and more automated and robotized”.

According to Ajay Kumar, unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned naval vessels, unmanned tanks and automatic robotic systems in our weapon’s system will make us at par with world powers and also these weapons systems will have an extensive use in future wars too. Production of a range of unmanned platforms for the three services(Army, Navy, Air Force) is also part of the project.
The Forces had been strongly pushing for wider use of AI in their operational preparedness at par with leading global military powers. The AI has much application in the surveillance of India’s borders with China and Pakistan as it can ease the pressure of armed forces personnel guarding our sensitive borders.
China’s ambitious plan to make them an “AI Innovation Centre” of the world by 2030 is looked up seriously by the Indian government. China has been investing billions of Dollars in AI research and machine learning. Same is the case with the US, Britain, France, and the European Union.
Successful terrorist hunts have been carried out by the US in Afghanistan and Pakistan using unmanned drones which operate with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Kumar hoped that with this joint initiative of industry and defense forces India would move ahead.
The recommendations of the Task Force headed by Tata Sons Chairman N.Chandrasekharan is expected to come in by June and the government will take the project forward.
Ajay Kumar has been a major force in pushing forward this project and he said that the fairly strong IT industry base of India was going to be the biggest strength in terms of developing AI capabilities. He said that under a finalized framework, industry and defense forces could work together to create a strong base for AI in defense systems. He also added that Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) would also be a major player in the project.
This ambitious project has its applications in the civilian sphere as well as in the field of the military.
