Massive protests break out, forcing police to use tear gas

Unable to control the crowds and the protestors, the city police force turns to the tear gas to disperse the people, only agitating them further.

The citizens of Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu have been protesting against the city’s Sterlite factory. The plant has been messing with the water, leading to various diseases like stroke and cancer among the people, including children.

For the past 3-month protest have going on for the plant to be shut down. Today the protest reached 100 days, and had turned violent forcing the police to use tear gas; the ‘144 order’ was implemented yesterday.

The fishermen too were supporting the strike, and strike crew announced that 18 villagers will block the district collector’s office. More than 10 people have been arrested as a precautionary measure. About 2,000 police have been deployed in Thoothukudi to arrest the villagers. 144 prohibition orders have been implemented in areas surrounding the Sterlite plant.

The police had blocked the people who tried to barge their way in the Collector’s office, forcing the police to use teargas.

1 person had died in the clash. H.K. Stalin has placed the responsibility on the AIADMK government and has stated that the violence occurred because the AIADMK refused to listen to the people’s plea.
