No Cash Available; Congress Party to Crowd Fund its Expenses

Congress party is facing a cash crunch and it could soon come in their way to effectively plan election strategies for 2019. It is reported that for the past five months, the leadership of the party has ceased sending funds to the state offices. The leaders have urged the workers to cut down the expenses and step up the contributions. The major industrialists seemed to have deserted the Rahul Gandhi-led party and in certain places might well be forced to crowd fund the candidates. The curbs that already exist on spending extends from serving tea at party offices to flight tickets.

Milan Vaishnav, a senior fellow for South Asia at the Cambridge Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC said “Headed into 2019, BJP has a decisive fund raising advantage, not least because the Congress and other key regional parties are seen as less business-friendly”.

What do the Statistics say ?
The numbers seem to agree with the plight of the Congress. The party has slumped from ruling 15 states to just 2 states from 2013 to 2018. Many of the states Congress lost was captured by BJP and their declared income during the financial year that ended in March 2017 is 1034 crores. This is an increase of 81 percent from the year ago, whereas the Congress party received 225 crores, which is a fall of 14 percent from previous year. BJPs expenditure accordingly has doubled and is well ahead of Congress in attracting donations from corporates. BJP received donations of 705 crores from 2987 corporates during four years which is way ahead of Congress who got 198 crores from 167 business houses.
