The RSS, the ideological mentor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is divided over the choice of a successor to Kerala BJP chief Kummanam Rajasekharan, who has been named the Mizoram governor. A section of the RSS insists that no one from among the state leaders should be chosen as the new president, while another section insists a familiar face is needed.
There is also a demand that the state leadership should be totally revamped.
The general feeling within the RSS is that the proposal for a generational change, mooted by seniors as the medical college graft scam emerged, has to be enforced now. The thinking at that stage was for such a revamp while retaining Kummanam at the helm.
The RSS wants an experienced organiser. The names of Aravind Menon, who had been RSS secretary in Madhya Pradesh for long, and senior RSS leader J Nandakumar are doing the rounds.

Nandakumar, who is a trusted aide of BJP chief Amit Shah, is a certainty if he is willing to take up the task. The question is whether he will be interested in taking a plunge into the state politics. Shah has taken the opinion of senior RSS leaders Harikrishnan, Gopalankutty master, and KK Balram.
State leaders K Surendran and M T Ramesh would be considered only if a suggestion to name a familiar face ahead of Lok Sabha polls gathers strength. V Muraleedharan, MP, and his supporters are pushing for Surendran. At the same time, the RSS is known to have told Shah that if either of these leaders is chosen it could renew infighting in the party.
