Tamil cinema industry is one of the leading film industries in India. In terms of content, technicality, performances, production values, direction or promotions, Kollywood is up there with the very best.

Here’s the list of highest grossing Tamil movies of all time

Director S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has become the highest grosser of Tamil cinema. Released on 28 April in four languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam, the biggie became the first Tamil-dubbed flick to do a business of over a 100-Cr. The movie also became the fastest film in Tamil Nadu to earn over a 100-Cr beating Kabali. Breaking quite a few other Tamil movies box-office records, the film’s collections till date are a massive Rs. 1,725 crore (US$270 million), worldwide making it one of India’s biggest earner so far.

Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)

Baahubali: The Beginning became the second highest Tamil film to earn the most at the box-office. Starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj and Nassar, this costume drama features among the most popular blockbuster Tamil movies to release in recent years. The S.S. Rajamouli directorial set up the tone for its sequel that followed two years later as the worldwide collections it raked in was a cool Rs. 650 Cr (US$100 million).

Kabali (2016)

This Pa. Ranjith directorial starring Rajini was not one of the most eagerly awaited Tamil films of 2016 but also one of Kollywood’s highest grosser’s. Produced under the banner of V Creations and shot extensively in Malaysia, Kabali’s box-office collections worldwide read as a mammoth Rs. 477 crore (US$74 million) approximately. Kabali’s 1st-day collections went on to prove Rajini’s popularity at the box-office making it Thalaivar’s highest ever Tamil grosser to date. Kabali’s total collections might be hard to beat in the near future.

Enthiran (2010)

Director Shankar’s sci-fi flick Enthiran wasn’t just a south India industry hit but the first Tamil film to gross 200 crores in Kollywood. The film features as one of the then biggest Tamil blockbuster movies which saw superstar Rajini pairing up with Aishwarya Rai for the first time. Enthiran’s final collections were Rs. 289 crore (US$45 million). Though it was Rajini’s clone Chitti who walked away with all the accolades in the film, its success added yet another feather to Shankar’s overcrowded cap.

Mersal (2017)

Vijay’s Mersal directed by Atlee set the box office on fire when released in 2017. The film opened to extraordinary collections and despite getting into a few controversies it went on to garner Rs. 244.8 crore, worldwide. Thus, becoming the 5th biggest south lifetime grosser and the 3rd biggest Non-Rajini grosser of Kollywood.

Dasavathaaram (2008)

If at all there was any Kollywood star to beat the record of playing the most number of roles in a Tamil film made by Sivaji Ganesan in Navarathri, it had to be Kamal Haasan. Kamal pulled off 10 characters on screen with ease in this sci-fi disaster film. This K. S. Ravikumar directorial went on to establish quite a few Tamil movies box-office collections records as it managed to earn a good Rs. 200 crore (US$31 million), worldwide.

Vishwaroopam (2013)

Despite facing a lot of controversies, Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam was another big winner at the box-office. Produced under the banner of Raaj Kamal Films International, the flick also starred Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur, Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah and Jaideep Ahlawat in supporting roles. It was released in Tamil and Hindi and later dubbed into Telugu too. Vishwaroopam managed to garner Rs. 220 crore (US$34 million) at the box-office worldwide.

I (2015)

Yet another S. Shankar directorial which finds its way into the list of top 10 Tamil movies of all time. Made under the banner of Aascar Films Pvt. Ltd, this romantic thriller had Chiyan playing a bodybuilder in love with Amy Jackson who accidentally is deformed due to consumption of a pesticide. Reportedly, made on a budget of Rs. 90 crore, the film managed to earn a good Rs. 240 crore (US$37 million) despite garnering mixed reviews by critics.

Lingaa (2014)

Lingaa was the first Thalaiva movie to release on the superstar’s birthday. The Rajinikanth-K. S. Ravikumar combination guaranteed a fantastic initial on its opening day breaking all previous Kollywood box-office collections. Superstar Rajini played a double role of that of father and son. The action drama also starred Anushka Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, Santhanam, Jagapati Babu and Karunakaran in pivotal roles. The film grossed Rs. 154 crore (US$24 million), worldwide.

Thuppakki (2012)

This action thriller starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal released during Diwali went on to become the highest grosser of 2012. Despite garnering critical appreciation, this A.R. Murugadoss directorial had its share of controversies for showing Muslims as terrorists in the film. Thuppakki grossed Rs. 117 Cr for its Tamil version, worldwide. The movie was later remade by the same director in Hindi as Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty which starred Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha.

Kaththi (2014)

Director A.R. Murugadoss paired up with Vijay once again to deliver this revered Diwali blockbuster in 2014. Kaththi starring Vijay and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead was one of the top grosser’s of Kollywood that year which grossed a total of Rs. 126 crore, worldwide. Kaththi, which revolved around farmer’s issues, is considered one of Vijay’s best work to date and one of the most commercially successful films in Kollywood. The film was later remade in Telugu with Chiranjeevi as Khaidi No. 150.
