Nothing surprising in the invitation to former president Pranab Mukherjee to address RSS cadre

On the wake of a controversy regarding the RSS invitation to President Pranab Mukherjee to deliver the main address at the valedictory function of over 800 cadres, RSS came out with the clarification.RSS said that “there was nothing surprising” about its invitation to the former President. They said that it had been their tradition to invite prominent personalities to their events and also brought to notice former President Zakir Hussain attending their events and praising them.

Stressing to the general theory followed in politics, that is ‘adversaries do not mean enemies’, RSS supported this move to invite Pranab Mukherjee who used to be a Finance Minister under the Congress regime. An RSS ideologue Rakesh Sinha said to the news agency ANI that former President Mukharjee’s acceptance to attend RSS event in Nagpur in Maharashtra had sent a message to the country on vital issues there should be dialogue and that adversaries were not enemies. He added that the questions raised on RSS-Hindutwa were being answered by the Prez’s acceptance of that invitation.

There is however a rift of ideas within the Congress Party about Pranab Kumar Mukherjee’s acceptance of the invitation. Some cited this as an incident which shows ‘magnanimity’ of the President while some other ridiculed him for accepting the invitation in spite of being a Congressman.

The Sangha Shiksha Varga is the annual valedictory function organised by the RSS in its HQ in Nagpur. Former President Pranab Mukherjee has been invited this year. This function marks the entry of successful cadets who passed first and second year training to the final year camp. Following this, they will be able to become full-time pracharaks.
