BJP waiting fingers crossed in Meghalaya

After the Congress victory in the Ambatti constituency in Meghalaya, BJP is waiting fingers crossed at the imminent threat of the party with the single largest majority, that being Congress, approaching the Governor to form the government.BJP, victors in 2 assembly seats, had joined with the National People’s Party which had 20 seats and also with U.D.P., P.D.F. parties to form the government in Meghalaya. But the victory of Mukul Sangma’s daughter Miyani De Sheera defeating the BJP candidate in the Ambatti constituency has posed a serious threat to the BJP. With her victory, Congress has become the single largest party with 21 seats.

In the 60 member state legislature, Congress coalition has the support of 23 MLAs.If they win in slicing out 8 more from the opposition, they will get the support of 31 MLAs and they can form the government.

Earlier, BJP was invited by the Governor in Karnataka to form the government there as they were the single largest party to win. Congress is going to try this same formula in Meghalaya by demanding to the Governor to allow them to form the government.
As the Congress still needs the support of 8 more MLAs, BJP is vigilant about the MLAs in their coalition partners. If the BJP fails to get the power in Meghalaya, just like in Karnataka, it will be the biggest blow to the party preparing for 2019 elections.
