Health and Social Justice Minister K.K.Shailaja while speaking to the media said that it was due to health department’s timely interference during the first stage of NiV outbreak that fatalities and further spread were able to be contained. The precautions were able to be taken thanks to the confirmation of NiV in the second death itself, she said. The timely containment of the virus spread paved the way to avoid further fatalities.
The Health Department had to wait for the confirmation of the NiV infection to the people who had been in contact with the primarily infected ones, till the end of the incubation period which would end on June 5. The suspected one’s were under surveillance, during which 2 people who had contacts with the primarily affected died and others were confirmed of the NiV infection, the Minister pointed out to the media persons in Thiruvananthapuram.

The extent of spread of NiV in the second stage is yet to be ascertained. So all the steps that had been taken to defend Nipah would be continued in the second stage too, the Health Minister clarified. The activities to identify the newly infected and the further infections from them are underway.
Health Minister told the people to be vigilant, but not apprehensive. She added that those who had come into contact with the infected should definitely be alarmed. The suspicions should be informed timely to the Health Department for one’s own life and for others lives too, K.K.Shailaja said to the media.
If any symptoms of Nipah virus is identified, then the people shall get themselves admitted to the Medical College. To meet this unprecedented NiV outbreak, the doctors and nurses had been provided with the sufficient training, Health Minister said. She further added that all the health workers including doctors and nurses had been for days under the strenuous task of defending the Nipah spread.
The Minster made clear that the Health Department’s aim was to avoid loss of even a single life due to lack of attendance. She applauded the co-ordinated work of Public-Private health professionals and workers in the NiV eradication activities.
