The clash at Kachanatham village caused the rise of death toll to three, with V. Chandrasekar, 34, succumbing to cut injuries at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai on Thursday. Two sub-inspectors of Palayanoor police station, have been suspended, on charges of suspected collusion with the accused.
One of the six grievously injured in the murderous attacks on Monday night, Chandrasekar, died after failing to respond to treatment.
Members of a dominant community in the area had attacked the villagers for failing to accord temple honour and sitting cross-legged in the presence of a caste Hindu. Two Dalits – K. Arumugam, 65, and A. Shanmuganathan, 31 – were hacked to death in the indiscriminate attack.
As family members and villagers refused to accept the bodies kept in the morgue at the GRH and held talks with officials on a charter of demands, including declaring Kachanatham and nearby areas as “atrocities-prone belt”, Superintendent of Police T. Jayachandran ordered the suspension of two SIs – T. Selvam and Janakiraman – on the charge of dereliction of duty.

The failure of two Sub-Inspectors to act on a complaint lodged by a Dalit against members of the dominant community after a tiff during the temple festival on May 25, which led to the brutal attack on Monday night.
Instead of acting on the complaint, the duo linked with the accused, the police suspected.
