Ceasefire violation of Pakistan killed 2 BSF jawans in J&K

Pakistan’s firing along the international border killing two BSF (Border Security Force) jawans, even after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire pact, reported PTI. The Indian side woke up to indiscriminate firing from across the international border in the Pragwal area of Akhnoor sector.

The two BSF jawans, including an assistant sub-inspector, were guarding a forward post gunned down. Both were critically injured and later died of injuries in the hospital. The violation of the ceasefire from Pakistan evoked a strong retaliatory action from the BSF, said reports. The two departed were identified as Constable Vijay Kumar Pandey and ASI Satya Narayan Yadav, according to the sources.

The Pakistani DGMO initiated a hotline contact with the Indian side to talk about a ceasefire. On May 29, it was agreed by the Indian DGMO Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan and Pakistani DGMO Major General Sahir Mirza to execute a ceasefire agreement of 2003 in “letter and spirit” to stop similar incidents on the border. The two commanders also reviewed the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border.

The ceasefire was announced after recent incidents of indiscriminate shelling from Pakistan between May 15 and May 23 along the LoC and international border in Jammu, Kathua and Samba forcing thousands to flee. The shelling left 12 people dead including 2 BSF jawans, a child and hundreds injured.

The death toll in ceasefire violations along the international border and LoC has reached 46 with the latest deaths, including 20 security personnel. The United States lauded the move to maintain peace between the two sides on Thursday saying that the peace between the two countries is vital for the peace in the region. “The US welcomes reports that the militaries of India and Pakistan have reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement the 2003 ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC),” said State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert in a statement.

Just a day earlier security forces and protestors in Srinagar clashed after one of the three stone pelters mowed down by a CRPF vehicle succumbed to his injuries. Protests broke out after the funeral procession of Kaiser Ahmad, 21, was carried out. Some separatist leaders such as KLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik were arrested as part of precautionary measures.
