Rs 1.04 crore Fake notes seized, one arrested

Fake currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination and counterfeit notes worth Rs 1.04 crore seized from a 31-year-old man in Coimbatore . Two more persons allegedly involved in this racket are said to be on the run.

Police said during vehicle check, a two-wheeler thief Anandhan, a resident of Maruthakonar Street near Velandipalayam in suburbs of Coimbatore, was quizzed on Friday night.

After checking the vehicle, police searched his person and were surprised to find four bundles of new Rs 2,000 currency notes in his pant and shirt pockets. The new currency was released post-demonetization. As he gave irrelevant statements during enquiry, he was handed over to the city crime branch police. Further investigations revealed that the currency notes were fake ones and photocopied in a shop in Coimbatore near Velandipalayam.

A special team led by south division crime assistant commissioner Somasundaram rushed to the spot and launched a search in a shop that was functioning in a rented room in Velandipalayam belong to one Venkatasamy, where bundles of Rs 2000 denomination notes were found. The police seized around 5,904 such fake currency notes worth over Rs. one crore.

Police also seized the materials used for printing fake notes including a colour Xerox machine, mobile phone, a two-wheeler and a computer.
