Ban on Kaala’s release; Prakash Raj comes up with support

While the booking for Rajinikanth’s latest movie has begun today, it is doubtful whether ‘Kaala’ will release in Karnataka. The film has been banned in the state due to Rajnikanth’s comments on the Cauvery water row.

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) is upset with Rajinikanth’s reported statement that whichever government comes to power in Karnataka should implement the Supreme Court order on Cauvery water sharing in toto. The chamber recently decided not to allow screening of his movie Kaala, due for release on June 7, in the state.

Over the Cauvery issue, Rajnikanth has faced the wrath of the pro-Kannada organizations.

Film Federation of India president, Sakshi Mehra has said that it has requested South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) to hold talks with KFCC to get the movie released, in the interest of the film industry.

A letter has been sent to the KFCC by the SIFCC secretary L Suresh, requesting them to solve the issue. “I have spoken to KFCC president Sa Ra Govindu and also written a letter to him. The KFCC would probably call for a meeting with the outfits tomorrow or the day after,” he said. Suresh said it is unfortunate that cinema is being mixed with politics, which would only result in a loss to the film industry.

“The ban on Kaala will not only affect the Tamil film industry but also the Kannada film fraternity and the Indian film industry as a whole,” he said.

Karnataka Rajnikanth’s Film Association has requested for the film’s release, stating the “politics should not be mixed with cinema”; the association has requested that the CM Kumaraswamy intervention in the matter.

Prakash Raj shared the sentiment of pro-Kannada activists about Rajinikanth’s remarks on the Cauvery issue. But, he said banning his film was not the right way to protest against his remarks.

“A statement made by actor Rajinikanth has hurt us deeply. Yes, I agree. In order to express our dissent, a few organisations have called for a ban on the film. Is that what we Kannadigas want? We don’t know and we will never know. If the film is released and people decide not to see it as a mark of their protest only then will be able to gauge what people really want. But these fringe elements deciding on behalf of the people will not let us know it. Who are these people to decide what most Kannadigas want or don’t want?” asked the 53-year-old actor.

He has also tweeted:

He slammed the protesting organisations, saying these “fringe groups” will disappear after “misusing our emotions” and wait for another opportunity to strike back again.

Prakash reportedly even met the members of the Kannada Film Chambers of Commerce to convince them to withdraw their protest against the release of Kaala.
