Bring relief to the tourists, the travel distance between Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla and Chandigarh will be cut to only 20 minutes, all thanks to a heli-taxi service launched on Monday. By road, it takes around four hours to reach to the Himachal’s tourist destination from Chandigarh.

The Himachal Pradesh government collaborated with Pawan Hans Ltd (helicopter service operator) to launch a to and fro heli-taxi service to commute between Chandigarh and Shimla.

Each trip can carry 19 passengers. The government has introduced the service for a minimum fare of Rs 2,999 per person.

The Shimla-Chandigarh heli-taxi service will, in the initial stage, ply only two times a week – Monday and Friday. The chopper will carry passengers from Shimla’s airport at Jubbarhatti at 8 AM and arrive at the Chandigarh International Airport just 20 minutes later, i.e. at 8.20 AM. Those commuting from Chandigarh to Shimla will have to board the flight at 9 AM to arrive at Shimla at 9.20 AM.

Based on the travellers’ response, the authorities will increase the frequency on the heli-taxi services said an official with Pawan Hans.

The first service from Shimla was flagged off by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. He hopes that this would be of great help in boosting the tourism industry in the state.

A heli-taxi from Chandigarh to Manali is also on the cards. As per an official, sortie service between Manali to Rohtang Pass is also being considered.
