India’s first Smart Electric Scooter to hit the roads; prelaunch booking started

After 5 years long waiting, India’s first Smart Electric Scooter Ather S340 is going to hit the roads. Before its official launch in August, Ather S340 which has been designed by IIT Madras graduates Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain and its updated version Ather 450, the prelaunch booking has started. These 2 models will be first launched in Bangalore. The price of Ather S340 will be approximately 1.09 lakhs and for 450 it will be approx. 1.3 lakhs. Ather’s launch is a significant step in India’s electrical vehicle sector which has been suffering due to the lack of infrastructure and faults in the policymaking.

The dream was made a reality thanks to the investment by Flipkart founders Sachin Bansal and Binni Bansal, Tiger Global along with India’s biggest two-wheeler manufacturers Hero Moto Corp.

More than the Chinese make-believe models, this ‘truly Indian’ electric scooter has to overcome many challenges. The main challenge is the lack of charging stations. But the Central government on April issued an order allowing to build charging stations without the permit to sell electricity. Ather Energy company announced that they would start their own charging station called ‘Athergrid’ in Bangalore and would provide for all the vehicles for the first 6 months, free charging facility.

In their White Field Facility per week, about 600 vehicles are completed. By 2019 they will extend their sales to Chennai and Pune.

With qualities similar to the 110cc gearless scooters, Ather 340 can travel 60 KMs in 72m/her speed with a one-time charge. The battery which is waterproof and vibration proof can stand 50,000 Kms. Its also 20% lightweight compared with other scooters. Ather 450 which looks similar to Ather S 340, can travel 75 km in 80km/hr speed.

As a Smart Vehicle, its 7 inches Capacitive touchscreen dashboard is connected to the Cloud, which makes it collect the traveling habits of the owner and suggest more easier ways to commute. Along with the distance and mileage, Range, battery life, GPS map etc will be shown on the screen.
