Won’t join China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative : India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made clear that India would not join the ‘One Road, One Belt'(OBOR) initiative by China. Modi made the stand clear in Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO) summit.

In the summit, PM said that India gave priority to maximising transportation facilities in cooperation with the neighbouring countries but it would be in strict adherence to the boundaries and sovereignty of all countries. The China-Pakistan economic corridor in connection with OROB is what made India take an adverse stand towards the scheme.

The proposed China-Pakistan economic corridor passes through the Pak occupied Kashmir(Pok), which further intrudes into the disputed Gilgit-Baltistan area of the Balochis, which made India take a serious and stern stand on the issue. At the same time, all the 7 other countries in SCO proclaimed their complete support to OROB.

Though apart from the summit India has not made any public declaration about joining or not joining OROB.India signed treaties with Afghanistan for a combined infrastructure development scheme in Afghanistan.
