A couple died and six persons were injured, among three of them critically suffer injuries, when a wild bear attacked them at Yerramukkam under Sompeta Mandal in Srikakulam district on Sunday.
Raged villagers chased down the bear and killed it later near Pitali. The victims were identified as Baipilli Urmila, 40, and her husband Baipilli Tirupati Rao, 45, of Yerramukkam.
According to the sources, the incident happened early on Sunday on the outskirts of the village, The bear attacked Urmila while she and a few others were working on an agricultural field. Upon noticing this, her husband and six others rushed to the spot to try and fight off the bear and rescue her.

Their efforts to save her lead to the injuries of many. All the injured were rushed to the government hospital at Palasa where Urmila died while undergoing treatment. With the condition of four injured turning critical, they were transferred to King George Hospital in Vizag where Tirupathi Rao died. The condition of one of the injured, B. Duryodhana, is said to be critical condition.
