The founder of Ringing Bells, Mohit Goel has been arrested by Delhi police, along with two others, on Sunday evening for allegedly trying to extort money in lieu of settling a rape case. Ringing Bells offered world’s cheapest smartphone ‘Freedom 251’.
“Mohit Goel, founder of Ringing Bells that offered world’s cheapest smartphone ‘Freedom 251’, and others arrested by police in Delhi. More details awaited,” a tweet by news agency ANI read.
In another post, the agency asserted that the police have arrested three people of a gang who were allegedly trying to extort money in lieu of settling a rape case. Mohit Goel is amongst one of the 3 people who has been arrested.

Ringing Bells Managing Director had earlier in 2017 spent over three months in jail on allegations of fraud. However, he got bail from the Allahabad High Court on May 31. Mohit Goel was arrested on the complaint of Ghaziabad-based Ayam Enterprises which alleged that he ‘defrauded’ the company of Rs 16 lakh.
Charges against Goel and four other directors of Ringing Bells were framed on February 22 under Indian Penal Code’s Sections 467 (forgery of valuable security, will), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 120b (criminal conspiracy).
Ringing Bells launched Freedom 251, dubbed as the world’s cheapest smartphone at Rs 251, back in 2016.
