Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un aimed ‘complete denuclearisation’, signed a “comprehensive” document

United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Singapore for the summit aimed to realize the ‘complete denuclearisation’ of the Korean peninsula.

The beginning of the summit was marked by a firm handshake by the two leaders, who later signed a “comprehensive” document at the end of their meetings.

No immediate details about the contents of the document were available. However, Trump is anticipated to reveal the details of the document at a press conference later today before flying out of Singapore.

Kim committed to ‘complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula’ in the joint text. The US, on its part, committed to ‘security guarantees’.

The fact that Trump and Kim “can sit together and have equal talks has important and positive meaning, and is creating a new history,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. “The crux of the peninsula nuclear issue is a security issue. The most important, difficult part of this security issue is for the United States and North Korea to sit down to find a way to resolution via equal talks,” Wang added.

South Koreans have also hailed the summit between Trump and Kim, with the local media dubbing them as the “talks of the century”. “We hope the summit will be a success and bring us a complete denuclearization, peace and a new era” in relations between the two Koreas and the United States, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said.

10. Earlier, Kim praised host Singapore and its “clean and beautiful” environment, vowing to “learn a lot from the good knowledge and experience of Singapore in various fields in the future”, as per North Korean state media.
