Lesbian couple jumped to the river along with a three-year-old baby

Two lesbian couple jumped into Sabarmati River along with a three-year-old daughter of one woman. Both of the women have lost the lives, killing the young girl because of their unfulfilled love. The two women were in a lesbian relationship. One of the women, Manju (name changed) was 30 years old while another woman, Juhi (name changed) was 28 years old.

The bodies of three women were intercepted floating in the Sabarmati river near Gurjari Bazaar side. Manju’s three-year-old daughter was breathing when she was discovered on the river bank. She was immediately admitted to nearby VS Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. There were protests in Bavla town near Ahmedabad. Women expressed their anger at societal norms and resistance to a lesbian relationship. They wrote messages on Sabarmati river front’s parapet wall with red lipstick.

“We have left this world to live with each other. The world did not allow us to stay together. We did not have any men with us. This world did not allow us to stay together. When will we meet again? When will we meet.. perhaps in the next birth… we will meet again.” This is what the message was written on parapet read as reported. One of the women was native of Ghanshyam Residency in Bavla. She has married 10 years ago and had two daughters aged three and six.

Another woman was a resident of Rajoda village near Bavla and had two sons aged fourteen and thirteen. Both women were arranged in their marriages by their parents. The case is registered in Sabarmati Riverfront police station.

A sexual relationship between same-sex individuals is a criminal offence as per section 377 of Indian Penal Code. Since the women could not legally get into a relationship with each other they considered suicide as their only option.
