Two girls threaten suicide to Agra police, unless not provide safety cover to marry

Two girls from Mathura have met the city police and mentioned that they are in a relationship, the girls have asked for police support to get married since their parents have disapproved of their relationship.

The situation has landed the city police in a soup owing to the laws regarding same-sex marriages in India. According to a report, the girls aged 18 and 20 years, have threatened to commit suicide if they are not allowed to marry and live together as requested.

Police have confirmed that they have been approached with such a request in the form of an application that was given to them by the girls. In a try to solve the issue peacefully, police then informed to their parents and summoned them.

However, the girls denied to give in to their parents’ demands and insisted on getting married. The girls work in the same beauty parlour and have been in a relationship for the past three years, they told.

The 20-year-old girl also said that what other people think of their relationship does not bother them, adding that she wants to live with her “girlfriend”. “I cannot live without her and I don’t know why anyone has an objection if we are ready to stay together,” she told media while adding that the local police have assured her that they will resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old girl said that the couple does not want to run anywhere but simply wants to stay together. Considering that same-sex marriages are outlawed in India and committing suicide is also in violation of the law, the police are looking into legal precedence overlooking similar cases in the past. In the meantime, both of the girls are living at the local women police station, said Superintendent of Police (city) Shrawan Kumar Singh.
