Exclusive pics and video of the rescue of 22 crew members from MV SSL Kolkata; domestic merchant container on fire

MV SSL Kolkata, a domestic merchant container vessel reported fire onboard on June 14. The coast guard ships from Haldia, Rajkiran and Dornier reached the venue within three hours and started their rescue operation fighting rough seas and strong winds. The antithetical weather conditions made 70% of the ship engulfed in fire.

The news which arrived as a solace was that 22 crew members had been saved. The mission to save the other crew members is ongoing.

MV SSL Kolkata that belongs to Shreyas Shipping and Logistics, was on a voyage from Krishnapattinam to Kolkata. An explosion was reported from the container’s deck, yesterday around 22:15hrs, which was followed by a fire on Vessel’s deck. Currently, the vessel is off Sandheads near Kolkata port and all available resources are being mobilised.

The incident followed another one in which another merchant ship MV Nalini caught fire off the coast on Wednesday and one crew member had suffered major burn injuries. A rescue operation was launched by the Indian Army then.

The ship had lost its power supply and also the propulsion following which a request was sent to the crew members for evacuation. A defence spokesperson informed PTI that he had received a message from the ship that had it 22 crew members on board and that one of the members had suffered 80% burn injuries.
