Gujarat: Upper caste community dragged down dalit groom from the ceremonial horse

In Gujarat, a groom from the Dalit community was forced to get down from the ceremonial horse while reaching his wedding venue by the upper caste Darbar community. Furthermore, Prashant Solanki, the groom, was allegedly threatened by the locals in Parsa village in Mansa taluka of Gandhinagar district that if anyone in the wedding procession dared to burst firecrackers, they would have to face dire consequences.

Solanki, aged 27, is an employee of Mehsana’s Dudhsagar Dairy and was understandably upset over the entire incident that ruined his marriage celebrations. Talking to the source, Solanki said, “I had travelled from Mehsana to Parsa in the car and when we reached the bride’s village, my relatives arranged a mare so that I can ride on it till the bride’s house from the village entrance.

But this did not go well with some Darbar community members, who had first objected to bursting crackers by my relatives and they became more aggressive when they saw a mare being arranged for me.” The harassed groom also told the paper that the other community also threatened him of physical harm if he chose to ride the horse. He was told that his legs would be cut-off and the DJ who was welcomed to provide music for the wedding was also roughed up.

The ordeal lasted for many hours as the entire wedding party had to wait outside the village for want of police protection. Upon the intervention of police and the village sarpanch, the wedding functions could proceed further.

The bride, Varsha Parmar, was emotionally scarred due to the incident and also feared for the safety of her relatives in the aftermath of the marriage. The cost of the wedding was upwards of Rs 2,00,000 and the bride’s family had taken a high-interest loan for the same.
