New Beer Production Facility to Come up in Kannur: Is this How Kerala Govt Follows its New Liquor Policy of Promoting Voluntary Abstinence of Alcohol?

It will make a lot more sense if you do it once rather than preaching it for a hundred times. This is about Kerala Governments New Liquor policy, where they keep repeating that they are all standing for ‘voluntary abstinence’ from the consumption of alcohol, with their actions seldom justifying it. The latest news comes from the district of Kannur in Kerala, where a new Brewery, capable of producing 5 lakh cases of beer in a month have been given approval to be established. Thus, Sreedharan Brewery Private Ltd is all set to be the third brewery in Kerala along with the ones in Palakkad and Thrissur.

40 percent of the beer being sold in Kerala are imported from other states. So it was suggested that a local production unit would open up more employment opportunities. In addition to that, Excise Commissioner had already recommended a new brewery since it could bring additional revenue to the government.

The actual statistics would reveal that despite a decrease in the number of beverage outlets, Governments revenue has only gone up. In 2017-18 Financial year, the corporation made a whopping 11024 crores , which is 671 crores higher than the previous year.

The government has given license to 86 new bar since it came to power. 21 more requests for license are pending, according to sources.
