Kerala Government has excluded Plantation sector from the list of Ecologically Fragile Lands sparking doubts about the Commitment of government in protecting the environment. It was on Wednesday that the crucial Cabinet decision was taken, subverting the Kerala Forest (Vesting and Management of Ecologically Fragile land) Act. The decision was reportedly taken under the recommendations of Justice Krishnan Nair Commission, appointed to study the problems of plantation sector.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed this in the assembly under Rule 300. It is possible that the decision could prove detrimental to the government itself in the ongoing encroachment cases in court. Cash crops like Cashew, Coffee, and cardamom are already excluded from the fragile land Act.
Famous Advocate Susheela Bhatt has accused the government of helping the ones who loot the resources of Forest with this change in the rule. More responses against the government’s move are expected to come in the coming hours.
