This was the first ever encounter between Australia and Peru and plenty was at stake for Kangaroos having scored only one goal against South American teams in World Cup group stages before. The Aussie seemed to have better control of the game in patches, enjoying greater possession, getting more corners but they forgot to do the most important thing- to score a goal.

It was on 18th minute that Paolo Guerrero latched onto a long ball played over the top and got free from Sainsbury before sending a cross to the other side of the penalty area for Carrillo who volleys the ball past Mat Ryan with incredible power. The goalkeeper had no chance.
Later, five minutes into the second half Paulo Guerrero made it 2 – 0 for Peru. It was brilliant one-two pass with Trauco sending Flores through and free into the penalty area. Flores sends a chip forward for Guerrero who, after letting the ball bounced once , turned and fired away a volley which took a touch off the leg of Mark Milligan before nestling into the net.
