Although Donald Trump is ‘Zero-tolerant’ to immigrants including from India, he could not stop himself from praising the talent of these Indian brains. Among the 161 young students honored by him last month at the White House, about two dozen students were of Indian descent. It also points towards the inability of successive Indian governments to keep the talented Indians within the country by offering innovative education and wider job opportunities.
The young students were selected for the Presidential Scholars Programme, considered the nation’s highest honor for high school students. Mihir Patel, a student who was graduating from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology(TJHSST) in Fairfax, Virginia was one among the honored Indian brains. Patel with the help of the scholarship will be able to pursue a combination of computer sciences and economics at Stanford. He developed an invention which could remotely calculate the progress of lymphedema-a condition of fluid retention in limbs. He also developed a mobile app and computer vision algorithms to automate limb volume measurements and a paper on the project is currently under review for publication.

Another significant invention by Mihir Patel was a tool for automated identification of Islamic State(IS) propaganda accounts on social media which was presented before the US National Security Agency.
Kavya Kopparappu, with her roots in Andhra Pradesh, was also a graduate student from TJHSST who was honored by the US President. Her invention, Eyeagnosis system, which uses machine learning techniques and a 3D printed smartphone lens attachment for the automatic screening of diabetic retinopathy, is already a vogue in the field. With the help of the scholarship, Ms.Kopparapu will undertake a joint programme in Biomedical engineering and computer science at Harward.
Mr.Trump congratulated the scholars and said that they were doing great things. He asked them to keep that up and also wished a good life.
