It was Akinfeev’s goalkeeping prowess that really made the difference between the two sides. Spain enjoyed greater possession throughout the match but failed to convert that to goal.
“It was not a good way to say goodbye, but football and life are like that,” said Iniesta, after his 131st and last appearance for his country. “I am leaving with a nasty taste in the mouth. We screwed ourselves because we didn’t manage to make that extra step.” he added.

Croatia 1 – Denmark 1(Penalty: Croatia 3- Denmark 2)
Having lost two of their previous penalty shootout at major tournaments, history was against Croatia but they did well to qualify for their first World Cup quarter-final since 1998. Danijel Subasic saved three penalties as Croatia knocked out dogged Denmark in a nerve-shredding shootout to set up a tie against hosts Russia.
