Thanks to Chinese pressure Air India changes Taiwan’s name;Taiwan registered strong protest

When the 56-inch chest might of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is boasted widely by the BJP online and offline cadres, another breaking of that air bubble has come in the form of continuing Chinese intrusion into Indian affairs. Even after a plethora of Modi visits and “bear hugs” with Xi Jinping, China unhinderedly continued their intrusions. The rekindling of the Doklam issue, starting mining near the Indian borders in Arunachal Pradesh, supporting Pakistan and also Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Sayed, the list just continues. To that, another succumbing to the Chinese pressure has come with Air India changing ‘Taiwan’ into ‘Chinese Taipei’ on their official website.

On Thursday, the Resident Trade Representative of Taiwan expressed deep disappointment with Air India in this matter. Taiwan ambassador Chung Kwang Tien who heads the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre(TECC) said that the move was taken by Air India gestured of succumbing to the ‘unreasonable’ and ‘absurd’ pressure from China, hinting that the move
might impact freedom of doing business with India.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Raveesh Kumar, however, defended India’s decision saying that the change was according to the international norms and India’s position on Taiwan since 1949. But Ambassador Chung strongly protested against that stating the move as a ‘politically motivated bully action’ which would undermine people’s freedom in doing business and their opinion of expression.

It’s another diplomatic crisis after India had invited Chinese wrath after hosting a delegation of Taiwanese legislators. A delegation of Indian MPs had visited Taiwan in 2016.
