Can’t control campus politics; Abhimanyu’s death an isolated one : Kerala Government to HC

Kerala government informed their helplessness in controlling campus politics to the High court. The ruling CPI(M)’s Student  Federation of India is the largest student organization in the state winning the unions in the majority of colleges across the state. Abhimanyu, belonging to SFI, had been brutally murdered by the Campus Front of India(CFI) activists, outside the campus of Maharajas College in Ernakulam. The ruling CPI(M) made a tie-up with Social Democratic Party of India(SDPI), the parent organization of the CFI, to win the panchayat elections in Thiruvananthapuram’s Vembayam. Thanks to the media, unexpected by the CPI(M), Abhimanyu’s murder case received much attention which the party could not resist coming against the fringe Islamic organizations SDPI and SFI. But then also Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan was mum on the name of the organization which conducted that heinous crime. The State  Youth Commission Chairperson Chintha Jerome classified the murder as an ‘isolated one’.

Though the CPI(M) and its feeder organizations have been conducting events across the state with the slogan”vargeeyatha thulayatte”(Damn with secessionism”), it seems that the CPI (M) led government has gone easy with the murder of Abhimanyu in their explanation to the High Court. The government informed the court that Abhimanyu’s murder was an isolated one. But the court strongly objected to that claim stating that whether it was inside or outside the campus, a murder was a murder. The case had been taken for hearing by the bench headed by Chief  Justice and High Court has sent a notice to the government on that.

The plea demanding a ban on the political activities inside the campuses was given to the court on the Abhimanyu’s murder. In 2004, the High Court had demanded Kerala Government to release directives to control political activities inside the campus. But the governments failed in acting on this demand by the HC. The petitioner Ajoy, a native of Chengannoor, also pointed out about that in his petition and alleged that the  LDF run government had the responsibility in the Maharajas murder.
