Kevin Anderson Who Stunned Federer at Wimbledon Had Once Lost to AB de Villiers

Roger Federer was a point away from a straight-set victory in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Just one point.

And then, slowly, over the next two-plus hours, all the way until the fifth set reached its 24th game, as the temperature dropped and the spectators’ cries of “Let’s go, Roger!” echoed through the shadows, everything came apart for the eight-time champion. Against an opponent who’d never beaten him nor made it this far at the All England Club. But the man who stunned him, Kevin Anderson had once lost a tennis match to none other than AB de Villiers.

Two years ago, Anderson had admitted that the cricketing icon is quite adept at tennis as well and also defeated him during their younger days in the national circuit. He said, “AB was a well-known tennis player in the junior circuit. I was two years junior to him, and we used to play against each other all the time.”I remember this one time when he defeated me in straight sets, but I gave him a tough competition.”

He added, “AB’s best part was his court coverage, he had an amazing backhand as well.” The former South Africa cricket captain is renowned for his multi-sport prowess and in his autobiography, he stated that he played golf, rugby and tennis during his younger days before turning his focus towards cricket.
