British bicycle manufacturer, Hummingbird has broken new ground with the launch of an electric edition, which at 10.3kg, is the lightest folding e-bike available on the market. The company has previously launched the 6.9kg folding bike in 2017, which held the record as the world’s lightest at the time.
Hummingbird has now developed a similar model with a battery-powered motor to assist its rider on the urban commute. The Hummingbird Electric is powered by a 250 W motor that has the highest power to weight ratio on the market. With its 160 Wh lithium battery, Hummingbird Electric folding bike has an electronically limited top speed of 25kmph and a travel range of 30+ km on a single charge.

Hummingbird has packed all the technology into a discreet rear wheel hub that is 180 mm in diameter and 120 mm thick. It can be fully charged in just two and a half hours, which relieves you of carrying an extra battery pack for emergency. The motor has a sensor that automatically senses the need of its rider, delivering the power required to perform the task. To start up the motor, the riders needs to only cycle up to 8kmph and then back pedal three revolutions. The motor then provides the assistance needed and also turns off automatically after two minutes stationary.
Hummingbird Electric bike also comes with Bluetooth connectivity as it allows the rider to connect their smartphone via the bitride app. The phone allows to access services such as online diagnosis, bike-oriented navigation, mobility stats and other social functions. As a safety features, the app also allows you to lock the rear wheel, in the event of a bike being stolen.
