ASI allows tourists to take snaps of monuments in Rajasthan

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has permitted tourists to take photographs within the premises of centrally protected monuments after Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioned the rules.

In Rajasthan, there are 163 protected monuments being conserved by the ASI while state-protected monuments are 227. The monuments coming under ASI are located in all districts of the state and the list includes the magnificent fort of Chittaur (Chittaurgarh), Ranthambore Fort (Sawai Madhopur), Sun Temple (Amber, Jaipur), Medha Ji Ka Mahal (Jamwa Ramgarh, Jaipur) and Kala Pahar Temple (Tonk).

Tourists visiting the sites were earlier restricted in clicking photographs as a precautionary measure as centuries-old monuments are in ruins and are slowly decaying. The ASI uses chemicals to preserve them and archaeologists continue to monitor the structures.

The placards hanging at the premieres warn offenders will have to shell out fine if they click photographs. This regulation has now been lifted forever in all 163 protected monuments following the latest order circulated by the ASI which has allowed photography within the premises of all centrally protected monuments and sites.

The decision comes in wake PM Modi’s speech at the inaugural event of ‘Dharohar Bhawan’ in New Delhi Thursday where he said that space technology in the modern era has developed to such an extent that one can photograph even minute objects from far off distances.

“And in this background, it is indeed ironical to restrict the tourists or visitors from taking photographs of their experiences at heritage monuments and site,” he said. There are 3686 centrally protected monuments and sites under ASI. The conservation and maintenance of these monuments, including forts and temples, is done regularly as per the availability of resources.
