The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) took a U-turn on its stand on Section 377 and said it was in favour of the ban. The Board had previously opposed scrapping Section 377 in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court. The Muslim Board said it was disappointed with the government’s decision of seeking Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter and leaving it to the apex court to decide.
“We support Section 377. Homosexuality is injurious for human health, it should remain a crime,” said Zafaryab Jilani, the secretary of the Muslim Personal Law Board. Homosexuality is banned in traditional Islamic law and the Law Board had always taken a stand against demands for scrapping Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

This time, as the Centre left the decision to the Supreme Court on lifting the 150-year-old ban, the Law Board had said they would not contest the matter. “We left the matter to the Supreme Court. We will not participate in the (Section) 377 proceedings,” said AIMPLB member Yusuf Hatim Muchhala.
The Law Board’s senior member hinted at a change in the stance while expressing disappointment in the government’s green signal on the matter. Favouring the ban, Jilani slammed the Centre for the neutral stand. “The board expresses regret that the government has taken a neutral stand… The government should take a stand and contest the matter in Court,” Jilani was quoted as saying
