The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would soon issue new Rs 100 notes, with a base colour of violet and smaller than the previous version, according to a report published in Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar.
The new note is equipped with many micro-security features. The central bank is likely to release the new currency notes in August or September, the report said.
According to the new policy on theme-based currency notes, the new Rs 100 note will have the impression of Gujarat’s Rani- ki-Vav (Queen’s stepwell), the report mentioned. In 2014, Unesco approved this 11th century wonder at Patan (Gujarat) as a World Heritage Site.

The report highlighted that the new Rs 100 note will be slightly bigger than the Rs 10 note, and weigh less than the old note. The Dewas-based Bank Note Press has already started printing the new Rs 100 notes, which are likely to come into circulation by September this year. It may be noted that India has currency denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 2000.
It may be noted that the old Rs 100 notes will not be withdrawn from circulation, the report said. Many experts are of the view that banks need to make changes in automated teller machines (ATMs) to adjust the new notes as was the case with new notes of other denominations.
Last year, the apex bank launched the country’s first 200-rupee banknotes, with a base colour of bright yellow. The Rs 200 note has the motif of Sanchi Stupa on the reverse.
