Former British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Thursday in Kolkata that the country should focus more on developing skill and infrastructure for development of its economy.
“India has immense potential for growth and needs to focus on skill development, education and infrastructure,” David Cameron said in an interactive session organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce at its annual general meeting on July 19.
Hailing India as a land of opportunity, Cameron said, “When I look at India, I think of one word opportunity. India is a country that is growing faster than any other large economy. Trade and Investment are not zero sum game we benefit from each other’s success.”

Praising Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Cameron said, “India is fortunate to have a leader like Narendra Modi with such clear vision.” He termed Modi as a leader, who deeply thinks about long term problems.
The Former British PM praised Modi’s “Skill India” programme, but added that such initiatives cannot be achieved through government-level initiatives.
Offering his perspective on world trade, Cameron observed that the current trade war between US, China, EU and India may be damaging for all countries in future. He said, “Free trade between countries is very important for sustainable economic development.Free trade is the key to success for any country.”
Cameron, who is in favour of a softer Brexit, said that “the EU market, comprising 500 million people, holds opportunities for cooperation and economic growth for the UK.”
He also said that there was an 80 per cent chance that UK would leave European Union on the basis of an agreed deal.
“Till now, there is a chance that Britain will leave the European Union on the basis of an agreed deal. However, there may be a soft Brexit at the end,” the former British Prime Minister said.
