Politics in India makes lawmakers and leaders indulge in a lot of activities– some political, few apolitical, and a lot of religious ones too. A recent video posted of a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MLA reciting Ramayana verses, on her Facebook account has gone viral. The video is now a hit on social media, and it comes after a major controversy broke out in the state over the planned seminar series by a pro-left outfit.
It is the occasion of ‘Ramayana Masam’ (Ramayana Month), and the people of Kerala observe the holy month by reciting verses from the sacred book. In a recent development, U Prathibha Hari – MLA from Kayamkulam constituency – is seen singing the verses marking the annual observance of the occasion.

Recently, a pro-left outfit Sanskriti Sangh found itself amidst controversies over the issue of Ramayana seminar series. The video went viral as soon as it was posted online and has garnered over 1,31,000 views till now after it was shared by more than a thousand people.
Reportedly, the CPM is behind the sponsoring of programmes organized by the Sanskriti Sangh. However, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishna clarified that the party had no plans to celebrate the occasion during the Ramayana month, which is also referred to as the month of Karkidakam, as per the Malayalam calendar.
