TODAY is the D-day for the Pakistan elections to take place. The provincial capital is all set for general elections. Wednesday has been declared a public holiday. Banks and businesses will remain closed.
Civil servants selected for election duty are all set. They are paid an extra allowance of Rs9,000 to Rs15,000. Returning officers have handed over polling materials and ballot papers to presiding officers.
There are 3,887 polling stations and 11,552 polling booths in the city. The highest number of voters is registered in NA-124 where former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif’s son is contesting the election. The number of registered voters is 533,497. There are 415 polling stations in this constituency.
The polling will start at 8:00 AM and continue until 6:00 PM. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the polling stations.
Results are expected to trickle in several hours later, the election commission says.
On Tuesday, ballot boxes, papers, and other election paraphernalia were transported to the stations, under armed guard.
The military has deployed more than 371,000 personnel to provide security inside and outside every station.
“We are trying our best to deliver free, fair and unbiased elections in Pakistan,” said Sardar Muhammad Raza, the chief election commissioner, in a video message on Tuesday.
“On July 25, I ask that you leave your homes and use your vote correctly to fulfill your national responsibility.”
Votes will be cast for 272 members of the lower house of parliament, as well as for the country’s four provincial assemblies.

APP FOR VOTERS
Meanwhile, an app has been launched to help guide the voters in finding the polling stations in Karachi.
The Commissioner of Karachi Saleh Farooqi made the proposal and a private company made the software for both Android and Apple users. Users can find directions to the polling station using the app.
In order to access this software the voters will have to download the TPL Map (the first indigenously developed digital map of Pakistan) applications on their phones and by entering their polling station number, the users would be able to track routes from their locations to the polling station directly.
This would eventually save the voter’s time and would curtail the chances of hassle and mismanagement, he added.
