Finally, Here is Some Good News About Delhi Air Quality

Delhiites breathed the cleanest air this week, with monsoon winds washing away the dust and bringing the air quality in the satisfactory level for the first time in nearly a year, authorities said.

The south-west monsoon hit the city this week with light rain on Monday and heavy showers yesterday, bringing respite not only from the scorching heat but also from the pollution which had peaked to unexpected levels this month.

This year, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of New Delhi was recorded at 43 which falls under the ‘good’ category, Gufran Beig, a scientist at the Centre-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research institute (SAFAR), said.

AN AQI RANGE:
0-50 is a good level of air quality
51-100 is a satisfactory level of air quality
101-200 is a moderate level of air of air quality
201-300 is a poor level of air quality
301-400 is a very poor level of air quality
401-500 is a severe level of air quality.
The PM 2.5 level (presence of particles with a diameter less than 2.5mm) was 39 in Delhi-NCR and 21 in Delhi on Friday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board data.

There was a dip in the air quality on June 13 due to dust storms in western India that pushed the pollution level to “severe plus”, bringing to light that emergency-level pollution could be a “summer-time problem” too.
