Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is currently busy gearing up for the release of Atul Manjrekar’s Fanney Khan, opposite Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. The movie is about a taxi driver, played by Kapoor, who wants to see his daughter become a famous singer, rising to the level of Baby Singh, played by Rai.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has essayed the character of a pop star named Baby Singh, understands how hurtful fat-shaming can be because the Bollywood diva was herself victim of fat-shaming in her post-pregnancy days when she had put on a lot of weight. In a recent interview with Rajeev Masand, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan finally opened up about the topic – fat-shaming. And not just about her film which delves into the social evil but also about her own experience with it when trolls had fat shamed her on social media and other platforms after her daughter Aradhaya was born.
“While it speaks about body-shaming, to me, it’s about self-esteem which I think is the larger topic. What’s the ‘F’ word that everyone’s worried about today? Fat! We very politely say overweight but truth is, it depends on the context. If you are addressing someone as that while being judgemental, of course it is a social evil, but even calling someone overweight, over and over again, would be just as bad!” she said.
The actress suggests that there are two ways to deal with it. While one can battle it or also not carry any baggage about and just be comfortable with who they are. It’ll affect those who let it. The interviewer also asked her about her own brush with body-shaming to which the actress had this to say:
“Body-shaming is just one aspect at a certain period in my life. The reason I am able to handle it is because I have faced judgement in my life for so long. Articles have often said that ‘oh! she has had a fairly tale life’, my question is how to do you assume? The actress also revealed that while she was in architecture school studying, she had already started modelling and people in the school, including teachers would often take a dig at her choice of making it as a professional model while still finishing up her education.
Aishwarya emphasises that all those judgmental experiences throughout her life made her resilient to the judgement of any kind. “People think that if you look a certain way, you won’t be judged. But, believe me, irrespective of how you look, everybody gets faces judgement for something or the other,” – the actress concluded.
