8th woman Justice makes her way into the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court welcomes its 8^th woman judge into their esteem folds.

Madras High Court Chief Justice, Justice Indira Banerjee has been appointed the judge of the Supreme Court of India.

The notification to that effect has been issued by the Central government. The notification states,

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Kumari Justice Indira Banerjee, Chief Justice of Madras High Court, to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office.”

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the name of Banerjee J. on July 16 for elevation to Supreme Court.

Banerjee J., who is currently serving as Chief Justice of Madras High Court will be only the eighth woman judge Supreme Court has ever had.

Justice Indira Banerjee was appointed as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court on February 5, 2002, and was transferred to the Delhi High Court on August 8, 2016. She was elevated as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on April 5, 2017.

With Justice Banerjee’s elevation, the Supreme Court will have three woman sitting judges. Justice R Banumathi and Justice Indu Malhotra are the other two.

With this, the apex court gets its eighth woman judge, after Fathima Beevi, Sujata V. Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra, Ranjana Prakash Desai, R. Banumathi and Indu Malhotra.
