A techie comes home to surprise his wife for her birthday, only to fall to his death at his friend’s place.
A 32-year-old IT professional from Pune died after falling off the sixth floor of a Santacruz (E) building early on Friday. Tejas Dubey, who worked in Belgium, had flown to Mumbai the previous night and wanted to give his wife a surprise on her birthday on Saturday.
His Pune-based wife was an IT Professional too. Police said the French window that Dubey fell off from did not have grilles.
Police said Dubey was planning to stay with a friend here for a day and go to Pune by road for his wife’s birthday. The flat where the incident happened was being rented by his friend, Rohit Sinha. “Sinha and Dubey were classmates during their engineering course. When Sinha and another common friend learned of Dubey’s arrival in Mumbai, they went to the international airport to pick him up around midnight on Friday.

The trio then headed to Sinha’s 2BHK rented accommodation, which has a view of the airport,” a police officer said.
Police said the three had a long chat, and around 3 AM, Dubey and Sinha decided to go to bed, while their friend left for his home at Oshiwara. “Sinha has two roommates who were asleep in their bedroom. Dubey woke up around 5.30 AM. The bed is next to the window. The window was open, and while groping in the dark, he lost his balance and fell out,” said senior inspector Kailash Avhad.
The watchman informed Sinha and Dubey was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body was sent for an autopsy and his family was informed. Police said a chemical analysis at the state forensic science laboratory was awaited on whether Dubey and his friends had been drinking before the incident. Dubey had been working in Belgium since 2014. His sister is based in Bengaluru, police said. Vakola police have registered a case of accidental death and are recording statements of Sinha and his landlord.
