Ahead of the Bakr-Eid, online licenses were sanctioned by the officials for sacrificing the goats, only to be revoked and slammed for the action.
After being pulled up by the Bombay High Court, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed the court on Wednesday that it will stop with immediate effect issuing online licenses for the sacrifice of goats and sheep during Bakri-Eid.
While hearing the petition, the court said that the civic body’s grant of online permission for the sacrifice of goats without verification on Bakri-Eid is ‘ridiculous’.

A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Riyaz Chagala was hearing a PIL filed by Jeev Maitri Trust which is opposing the blanket online permission to citizens to buy maximum five goats to sacrifice during Bakri-Eid.
It was the apprehension of the petitioner that online license without verification sacrifice of animals can happen on footpath, society; pavements; public roads etc. and it would create health hazards and severely affect the environment as well as groundwater.
On Thursday, petitioner’s lawyer Sujay Kantawala informed the court that BMC’s online licenses granting system is so weak that two persons had even got the permission to sacrifice four goats in the courtroom of Chief Justice of Bombay High Court and Courtroom number 13, where the case is being heard. He also showed the relevant permissions.
The court also noted that despite directing the BMC commissioner look into the matter, he didn’t do anything.
