A group of youngsters in Kerala has come up with a solution for heading the distress relief programmes where the mobile networks are already down. As one can imagine, some of these areas are deprived of electricity and mobile connectivity and the men who are trapped and the ones heading the relief works cannot coordinate the activities. The youngsters from Wayanad have come up with a solution for this situation using Ham radio. They have already started a Wireless control room with Wayanad district as the center.
Initially, the rescue works were all coordinated using mobile phones. But as many of these places had no power for long, the phones have lost charge and there was no means to establish contact. It was under these circumstances that the district collector requested the help of Ham radio operators and the youngsters rose to the occasion. To exchange messages, the radio operators have been sent to the flooded spot. Currently, their control room is opened in Kalpatta collectorate on an experimental basis.
